Willem Ouwehand has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences
His citation on election reads as follows:
Willem Ouwehand is Professor of Experimental Haematology at Cambridge. His clinical expertise in haematology, particularly in blood transfusion, and his basic and applied science have addressed issues originating from his clinical practice. He has made important contributions to the understanding of the basic science of the development of platelets and other blood cells, exploiting technologies in genetics and immunology. His discoveries have been seminal in providing new insights into development of the haematopoietic system and he has been influential in the development of several Bioresources. His current work aims to develop new forms of tranfusable elements for patients.
